Raosaheb Ramchandra Patil, better known as R. R. Patil (Marathi: रा. रा. पाटील) (born August 16, 1958), is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party. He is also the former Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Patil was born in the town of Anjani in the Tasgaon taluka in the Sangli district in the state of Maharashtra.
On November 1, 2004, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party's Maharashtra unit and NCP legislative party in Maharashtra. He represents Tasgaon in Sangli district in the Maharashtra legislative assembly since 1990. He was also the Home Minister of Maharashtra in the previous government.
Patil is known for his so called 'honest image', and is known as "Mr. Clean" in his fan circles. He is also affectionately referred to as Aaba (meaning "father")by Ms. Kakodkar, a correspondent of NDTV. In the latest crisis his image did take beating but he puts up a brave face.
His comments in the aftermath of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, have drawn severe criticism for downplaying the gravity of the situation. He has quoted: (in Hindi) "bade shahron mein aise ek adh hadse hote rahte hain. Woh 5,000 logon ko marne aye the lekin humne kitna kum nuksan hone diya. (It's not unusual for such small incidents to happen in big cities. They (terrorists) came to kill 5,000 people but we ensured minimal damage)". Sources close to him have argued that his comments are being taken out of context and that he did not intend to downplay the grievous attack.
