Paul McCarthy (Salt Lake City, 4 augustus 1945) is een hedendaags kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Los Angeles, Californië.

McCarthy studeerde kunst aan de Universiteit van Utah in 1969. Later ging hij studeren aan de San Francisco Art Institute en ontving een BFA in de schilderkunst. In 1972 ging McCarthy film, video, en kunst studeren aan de Universiteit van Zuid-Californië. Sinds 1982 geeft hij lessen aan de Universiteit van Californië, Los Angeles. Momenteel werkt hij veelal aan video en sculptuur-projecten.

Santa Claus, alias Kabouter Buttplug
Bekend is McCarthy om zijn sculptuur "Santa Claus". De stad Rotterdam kocht het beeld in 2001 aan voor de Internationale Beelden Collectie. Inmiddels is voor het beeld een passende plaats gevonden. Veel bewoners vinden het beeld lijken op een kabouter met een buttplug, anderen zien er een kerstboom of zelfs een raketijsje in.
