Transparantie in optica en andere materialen kan grofweg in twee soorten worden verdeeld.

Bij afwezigheid van transparantie is er sprake van opaak of ondoorschijnend, het licht wordt aan het oppervlak teruggekaatst.

Sommige mineralen die in grotere stukken opaak zijn blijken in zeer dunne splinters (< 0,1 mm) vaak doorschijnend.
